Practicum A - Kindergarten Level

A Brief Summary of the Institutional Report and 
the Group Diagnosis Report


         I had the chance to perform the Kindergarten Practicum lessons at "Jardìn Infantil Krakeyen" which is located in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. The name of the institution comes from the Yamana language, that belongs to an ancestral native people, and it means "to learn".
     The institution was created in the year 1986 by Marìa Jose de Vivori and her sister Marìa Gabriela Sosa de Canavesi. In this kindergarten children have English lessons since they are two years old.
    The teachers who are in charge of the groups take into consideration not only the teaching of a foreign language in a communicative and meaningful manner; but they also consider students' cognitive, social and emotional development.  
    The teaching of English is accompanied by the use of information technology which aids the English lessons through videos, audios, games and stories. Therefore, students receive a greater, appropriate and meaningful input of the second language.
   As regards the group, they were a five year old children group called "The Woodpeckers" who had experienced at least two years learning the language. At this stage, children have already developed their psycho - motor abilities and feel secure in the learning environment. The group teacher was Fernanda San Emeterio, who is an experienced teacher. She always created a warm and peaceful environment to work with this group, which was formed by active and joyful children.




      Bearing in mind the kindergarten characteristics, the children stages of development, and the main aims of the Proyecto Institucional, I reached to the conclusion that the lessons I could offer had to include aspects regarding new experiences through new and innovating activities and the group involvement regarding everyday situations which give place to work with values in the classroom.











     Working with kindergarten children was a great challenge for me as it's been the first time I did it. That is the reason why I had to use my creativity to its utmost ! I tried to use as many resources as possible, but one of the most important resources has been my puppet " Jolly Giraffe". She was the main character of the student's workbook, so I created a giraffe puppet that worked with us during all the lessons.
     I introduce you to my "Jolly Giraffe" puppet:



     Children were very enthusiastic when listening to "Jolly Giraffe", they really liked the idea of having a new character with them every week. They always asked and waited for her. It's a fantastic resource that enhances children' imagination and creativity in the classroom.
     The lessons were about 30', no more. Nevertheless, I tried to use as much IT tools, songs, games and stories as possible.
